December 17

LOCAL
In what might be the biggest regular season basketball game in Madison County, the Highland Scots defeated the Anderson Indians. The Indians came out hot in the first half outscoring the Scots by 9. But after the break, Highland came out strong and with a new sense of urgency. It was Highland's defense that won them the game 47-45.


STATE
Governor Mitch Daniels just had a surgery for his abdominal hernia. It was an outpatient surgery that took place Friday, December 14. He gave a speech that morning before his trip to the hospital. The hernia was said to have been cause from too much wear and tear, but that Governor Daniels' exercise habits are very good for him.


NATIONAL









A Christmas card with a child's drawing in it just arrived in Oberlin, Kansas. However, this card was 93 years late.It was postmarked December 23rd, 1914 and then was lost in the mail, only to be delivered this past week. No one knows where it went, but it was placed in a new envelope with modern day postage and delivered to the descendents of the intended recipients in perfect condition.
WORLD

Lucy Kibaki, the Kenyan president's wife, recently lost her temper and slapped a government official across the face. The incident was believed to have taken place because the man introduced her by the name of the woman believed to be the president's second wife. The president has denied marriage to this other woman.

HEALTH
A new study has shown that even babies are able to distinguish between nice and mean playmates. Researchers say that babies observe others' behaviors and are more likely to spend time with the more well behaved, helpful kids. Right now there is no difference in the judgement of males versus females but more studies are being made to find out for sure.

SCIENCE
The amazing silver back gorillas may not be so amazing if the trends keep up. For years scientists in the Congo have researched them by slowly approaching their habitat and observing, but now poachers are taking advantage of this bond between the gorillas and humans. The gorillas are slowly dying off and becoming so violent that park rangers are forced to flee. The behaviors of these gorillas have baffled scientists.

ELECTION '08





Barrack Obama is still going strong and has some very influential supporters. Recently, there was a dinner held for Obama where Oprah introduced him. The crowd went nuts and started cheering for Oprah to run as his vice president. Obama said that would be a demotion for her but their friendship is helping Obama tremendously.



IRAQ

General Petraeus has given some good news; he says that the violence in Iraq is down by almost 60 percent. He says that the U.S. troops are doing a great job and that progress is very evident. However, Petraeus claims that while there has been much improvement, this has still been the most violent year for the troops and that no one is doing victory dances yet.

BUSINESS


With the iPhone becoming increasingly popular, other brands are having to do something to keep their business. The LG Chocolate is only $130 with a two year agreement and offers many, but not all of the same features the iPhone does. Samsong and Sony are also offering new phones with many new features, but the iPhone is still leading in sales.




SPORTS

The Patriots, despite the Jets 3-10 record, aren't going to take New York lightly. New England has planned for this game just as much as any other and the outcome will likely be the same. But will weather hurt the Patriots chances since they throw the ball the majority of the game? Whether it does or not, the Jets are 30th in the league at run stopping, so the Pats shouldn't have any problems.
